Silas Beebe b. 11 Nov 1849, Romeo, Macomb, MI, (son of Luman Beebe and Elizabeth Moon) m. (1) Ruth Sowles, d. 1877, m. (2) 24 Aug 1910, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Alice Henriette Caroline Ovenden, b. 24 Oct 1888, Carlton, Tasmania, Australia, d. 25 Dec 1976. Silas died 10 Feb 1938, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Silas toured the United Kingdom with the Bostock and Wombals Circus, exhibiting Linus, his horse with an uncut mane and tail. He moved to Australia in 1907 on the SS Miltiades, and brought in the first spotted Great Danes. He was a horse trainer and was engaged in harness racing (then called trotting). He became a notable member of the trotting scene in Melbourne and a citizen of Australia in the 1930s. He rented a coach house of a well-to-do family who had a large block on the Merri Creek, about 4 miles from Melbourne. This area is now an inner suburb of Melbourne. Alice, his second wife, lived in the house with her Aunt and one of her duties was to collect the rent from the American in the coach house. In 1997 the house still stands but has been converted to apartments and the coach house is gone. Alice was the daughter of William H. and Eliza J. (Brown) Ovenden. Silas and Alice had two children: 1. Silas Luman Beebe b. 13 Feb 1912, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, occ. Engineer, m. 1941, Dorothy Rae Bishop, b. 8 Apr 1915, d. 22 Jan 1995. He was Chief engineer of a Chemical Co. in Melbourne. Later he became Chief Engineer of the Australia-wide company. Silas studied music and in earlier days played with a dance band. He had three children; Raymond Silas Beebe, David Charles Beebe and Carey Alexander Beebe. The children were all born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. 2. Libbie Beebe b. 17 May 1915, occ. Tailor, d. 13 May 1990. Libbie was engaged to be married in 1940 but her fiance drowned. She lived in Thornbury, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia.
